Watch Out! A Newsletter for Waverley
Neighbourhood Watch
Cranleigh District February 2010 |
|
I must first apologise for the lack of a news letter for
January and February. The changes to this and perhaps, future copies of Watchout
are that this is the last copy for a while that will have the useful contact
numbers at the bottom (apart from mine and John Robini’s). Lists of crimes in
this letter and the ‘Crime Summary’ will no longer be circulated.
You can find crime information including the number of burglaries in your part
of the county by clicking on the link below (or cut and paste it into “Internet
explorer”) which will take you to the official Police web site and the crime
statistics.
It can be found at
http://maps.police.uk/
and you will need your post code or the post code of the area if you wish to
know the crime statistics of your patch.
Active Citizen E-mails
The
E-mails I now send out come from a new system called Active Citizen, have a blue
border around them and the Surrey Police logo at the top; this I am told is
“embedded” in the e-mail and cannot be removed. Unfortunately the filters put in
modern computers receiving E-mails like this assume that it may hide viruses or
‘spam’, and automatically reject the e-mail or put it in a special ‘Spam’
directory.
We are
now circulating notice of incidents over a wider area and I have had comments
i.e. that information on a crime near the Guildford Road is not of value to
someone in the Horsham Road area. It is a fact of life that this modern society
is mobile, and so is the burglar who may travel some distance to their chosen
place of burglary and think nothing of trying an area on the other side of town
as well. Similarities in types of crime suggest that this is happening.
Things to Watchout for.
There is
a saying “It is an ill wind that blows nobody any good” and the bad weather of
January may have been cursed but there was a downturn in neighbourhood crime
since the New Year. It hasn’t lasted and already we are seeing an upturn in the
activities of the criminally minded. “Door knockers” knocked on a door in
another part of Waverley (not near Cranleigh) and talked about being part of an
offenders job creation scheme (or similar). The house holder reported the
matter to the local police who are making further enquiries.
Drive SMART
As part of the
year long campaign, a new website has been launched which will allow members of
the public to report anti-social driving or parking. The process will be similar
to online crime reporting, as the Drive SMART site will include a ‘Contact Us’
section, which will link through to the online reporting tool on the Surrey
Police website. The site also includes an interactive driving skills game and a
poll where residents can vote for which anti-social driving behaviour annoys
them the most. As well as news and information about the campaign, the site
includes downloadable leaflets and posters about Drive SMART, the current
speeding campaign and parking issues.
To learn more about the site visit:

Staff at Rowley’s Day Centre Cranleigh have emailed to thank PCSO’s 13189 David
Sherwood and 10525 Steve Baldwin for their recent visit to talk about Crime
Prevention, reinforcing key messages through an ingenious bingo game: “The event
was a great success and we very much hope to do more community interaction with
our local officers in the future.”
And what it was like in January
As I’m
writing this piece we are experiencing one of the coldest snaps for years, I’m
able to get out and about having been lent a private 4x4, so a big thank you to
the gentleman who kindly donated his vehicle for police use. On the first day of
the snow I was called to what we describe as ' an intruder on' this is where a
resident has called police to say that they've seen a possible intruder enter a
property, we got to the house as soon as we could given the conditions, I
entered the house which was insecure and found no one at home, on further
investigation it transpired that the son had returned home and had left again
without the neighbour seeing him. We left the house secure and carried on to the
next job when we received another call to return to the previous house as there
were two males who had been seen lurking around a property; the caller stated
"they had police jackets on but didn't look like police officers, were
suspicious looking and using a blue vehicle. As you can guess it was us that had
been seen but as we were dressed like the two burglars from the film “Home
Alone” i.e. with woolly hats etc. it wasn't surprising that someone reported us,
however it just goes to show that neighbourhood watch works
